Local nature tips

If you want a taste of Milan’s wild side without leaving the city, check out a walk along the Naviglio Grande early on a weekend morning. The canal banks are a quiet refuge where you can spot kingfishers darting over the water and maybe even see fishermen casting lines.

Another spot I love is Parco delle Cave in the southwest part of town. It’s less touristy and offers a chance to spot wild orchids in spring and keep an eye out for frogs or turtles by the ponds. Great for a short escape from typical tourist routes, and easily reachable by tram or bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about nature tours in Milan? Here’s what I usually get asked.

Definitely! Parco Sempione offers some nice wildlife watching right near the city center, especially by the pond where you can spot herons and ducks. Also, the green areas around the Navigli canals are surprisingly lively, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Spring and early autumn are my favorites. Spring flushes the parks with flowers and bird activity, while autumn has cooler temps and the forests around Ticino Park turn stunning with color. Summer can get hot, but mornings are still lovely for walking.
Absolutely. Many tours start right in the city or near major metro stops. You can easily get to places like Parco delle Cave or Idroscalo via public transport, or join guided tours that provide transport to natural reserves like Ticino Park.
You will definitely see wildlife, especially birds. Deer and foxes can be a bit elusive but guides know where to look. It’s a mix of both – sometimes the quiet moments just watching the trees and water feel just as rewarding as spotting animals.
For sure. Lots of tours are gentle walks suited for kids, and places like Idroscalo have playgrounds and picnic spots. Just bring water and snacks, and maybe binoculars if the kids get curious about birds.
