Palazzo Lombardia, the new seat of the Lombardy Regional Government, is a powerful statement of contemporary Milan. Completed in 2010 and designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, among others, the complex is dominated by a 161-meter skyscraper—awarded 'Best European Skyscraper' in 2012. It’s a striking contrast to the nearby Pirelli Tower, featuring a concave, open design that fosters a dialogue with the city skyline. The genius lies in the "tower with wings" metaphor, where the central high-rise is flanked by curvilinear, low-rise buildings. These structures create a network of interconnected public squares, including a stunning covered piazza, Piazza Città di Lombardia. This vast, glass-roofed area is a vibrant urban hub, hosting events and offering services like restaurants and shops. The design brilliantly integrates the institutional with the public, making the space functional and accessible. Architecturally, it’s a masterclass in innovation and sustainability, featuring advanced systems like a climatic wall for energy saving. Visitors often queue to access the 39th-floor Belvedere, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Milan. Palazzo Lombardia is more than an office; it’s a successful piece of modern urbanism and a bold new icon for the city.
