Description

Your small group walking tour of Milan begins at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of one the world's most famous paintings, Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. Enjoy privileged and exclusive access to this renowned work and admire the immense beauty of it with only a handful of other people in the room. Continue on to San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore and admire its spectacular 16th-century frescoes across the ceiling and walls. Hear about the life and death of Santa Caterina, whose stories inspired the chapels within the church and its Luini frescoes. This church is often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the north of Italy and is a must-see for art lovers. The tour continues onto Piazza degli Affari, the financial district of Milan. This is the economic pulse of the city and gives Milan its eclectic mix of fashion, finance and folklore. Learn about its beginnings in 1808 and delve even further into the past, learning about Emperor Augustus’ reign before returning to the present and hearing about Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial public sculpture, L.O.V.E. (also known to the Milanese as ‘Il Dito‘ or the middle finger). Your tour will continue through the bustling streets of Milan before you get to San Satiro, designed by Bramante, who also designed the St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. You will be amazed by the incredible use of perspective throughout San Satiro, a technique that was completely innovative at the time. Your walking tour will culminate at Milan's most famous piazza and Basilica, the Duomo. A perfect example of Italian Gothic architecture, it was built under Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, but took nearly 600 years to finish. It remains the current seat for the Archbishop of Milan. The area also marks the heart of the city center of Milan and of what was once known as Roman Mediolanum during the time of the Roman Empire. Admire the Basilica from the majestic Piazza del Duomo as your guide explains all the wonders of the most famous church and piazza in Milan. Entrance to the Basilica is not included.
